Environmental criteria considered in 98 % of the city’s procurements

Climate and environmental issues matter when it comes to public procurements in Joensuu. In 2020, environmental criteria were considered in 98 % of the procurements the city of Joensuu was involved in. This percentage has increased every year. In 2017, the number was 72 %.

The environmental criteria are related to e.g. sustainable development, circular economy, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the origin of products and materials. These criteria have evolved in recent years, as there has been a shift from generally applicable conditions to more procurement specific ones. 

In near future, the environmental criteria should be further developed to better consider for example the carbon footprint, carbon handprint and life-cycle costs of procurements.
