Decarbon-Home – Towards carbon-free homes -research project 2020–2023

The City of Joensuu is a partner in the Decarbon-Home research project. The project operates from 2020 to 2023.

Decarbon-Home project promotes a just sustainability transition of housing and construction. The goal is to study and develop participatory solutions to the challenges caused by climate change and residential segregation. The project will produce information about the citizen’s values related to housing and climate change, as well as the preconditions of the climate action. In addition, tools and solutions are generated together with the cities, residents, and other stakeholders.

During the project, for example the agency of the citizens and the communities in the climate change mitigation and the preconditions and barriers of climate-smart housing solutions are observed. Co-creation and interaction play an important role. The aim is to create new solutions, develop tools and initiate experiments.

The project consortium includes researchers from the University of Helsinki, Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE), Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE), the University of Vaasa and Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech). The partner cities are Helsinki, Joensuu, Turku, and Vantaa. Numerous partners from different areas and levels of the society, from municipalities and companies to ministries and international experts, are also taking part in the execution of the project.

The project is funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC), which is an independent body established within the Academy of Finland. The project is planned to operate for six years.
